La Torre Rossa

La Torre Rossa oggi: agriturismo bed and breakfast tra Sperlonga, Itri, Gaeta, Formia

What was it? La Torre Rossa is dated between XIII-XIV Centuries. It was born as a farm for the production of wine and oil. At the center of a large room a grindstone rotated to obtain olive paste and the quadrangular red tower was a precious protection for this valuable product. In a spacious hall with a wide arcade, close to the work-place, there are traces of frescos of a figure with a radiant aureole, similar to those of the XI Century.

In a period where agricultural and craftsmen joined the sea trade, La Torre Rossa participated in the exportation of olives and olive oil.
At the base of the red tower there are interesting graphites of ships and Gaeta coat of arms from where ships sailed. After the napoleonic invasions, the overthrow of secolar institutions, and the epic deeds of the famous Itri personality Michele Pezza, (known as the brigant Frà Diavolo), La Torre Rossa was reduced to a simple animal enclosure -La Mandria di Santo Stefano-, as it appears on maps of the XIX Century.
